1) Talk to Your Child About Nail Biting

First, try to talk to your child about nail-biting. Ask your child if he or she bites their nails. Tell your child that it is a bad habit and that it can cause problems.

If your child says that he or she doesn’t bite their nails, you can say, “I know you bite your nails and I think it is a bad habit.” When you have told your child that nail-biting is a bad habit, it is time to teach them how to stop nail-biting.

2) Reinforce the No-Biting Habit

When you have talked to your child about nail-biting, it is time to teach them how to stop.

First, tell them not to bite their nails. Then show them by making them give up on the no-biting habit first. It would be easier for them if they had already given up on the no-biting habit first and then told them not to bite their nails again.

Next, reinforce the no-biting habit by asking them if they have already given up on the no-biting habit again after a while of stopping nail-biting several times or longer than several times in a row. Tell them that they are now good at giving up on the no-biting habit, and it is time to reinforce it by showing them that they are not biting their nails any more.

If your child is still biting their nails, show them by asking them if they are still biting their nails after a while of giving up on the no-biting habit several times or longer than several times in a row.
